Anxiety doesn't discriminate. Anyone can experience it, regardless of background or identity. But for people of color, anxiety often comes with additional layers that aren't always acknowledged or understood.
From racial trauma to systemic barriers in accessing care, communities of color face unique stressors that can intensify mental health struggles and make recovery harder to reach. Here's what you need to know about how anxiety shows up differently for people of color and which solutions can help.
What Is Racial Anxiety?

Racial anxiety is a specific form of anxiety that stems from experiences and fears related to race. It's the constant worry about how you'll be treated because of the color of your skin. It can look like:
Worrying that something bad will happen to you because of your race
Staying on guard in certain social situations or around specific groups
Avoiding places or events for fear of discrimination or microaggressions
This isn't general social anxiety. Racial anxiety is triggered by real experiences of discrimination, racism, and microaggressions that people of color face regularly.
Why Mental Health Stigma Hits Harder in Communities of Color
Many communities of color still carry a strong stigma around mental health. Admitting you're struggling can feel like a sign of weakness. In cultures where resilience and strength are highly valued, asking for help can be seen as shameful.
This stigma makes it harder to seek therapy or even talk openly with loved ones about what you're going through. The result is that many people suffer in silence and let anxiety build until it becomes unmanageable.
Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Care
Even when people of color want to seek help, they often face real barriers that make it difficult:
Limited access to services: Depending on where you live, finding a therapist can be tough, especially one who understands your cultural background.
Cost and insurance gaps: Therapy can be expensive, and not everyone has strong health insurance that covers it adequately.
Negative experiences in therapy: Some people of color have encountered therapists who displayed bias, misunderstood their experiences, or made them feel uncomfortable. These negative interactions can discourage someone from seeking help again.
The Impact of Untreated Anxiety
When anxiety goes untreated, the effects ripple outward. Over time, chronic anxiety can contribute to serious physical health conditions like heart disease, chronic stress, and insomnia. It can also deepen other mental health struggles like depression.
Untreated anxiety can also contribute to generational trauma. When stress and trauma alter genetic expression, those effects can be passed down, impacting future generations even before they're born. Breaking this cycle requires addressing anxiety now, not later.
Mental Health Solutions that Actually Help
Reframe therapy as a strength, not a weakness. Seeking help doesn't mean you're broken or weak. It means you're taking your well-being seriously and refusing to carry unnecessary pain. It is an act of courage.
Find a culturally aware therapist. Look for a therapist who understands the racial aspects of mental health and can help you navigate experiences of discrimination and microaggressions. A therapist who "gets it" can make all the difference in how safe and understood you feel in sessions.
Build strength in your identity and community. Find ways to feel more grounded in who you are and more connected to your community. Confide in people you trust, and lean into practices that affirm your identity.
